Just a short distance from the coast, nestled in the spectacular Welsh countryside, our coastal cottages in West Wales provide an idyllic base for a UK holiday this summer. If you’re seeking a rural retreat that combines tranquility and adventure, Dolgoy Cottages is the place for you.
The unique location of our four luxury, adult-only cottages makes it the perfect place for wildlife spotting. Our scenic location is a haven for some of the most incredible wildlife in the UK, from birds of prey circling the summer skies to dolphins leaping in the bay – there’s plenty to look out for.
Here we have provided a short guide to the types of wildlife you could be lucky enough to see this summer during your stay at our dog-friendly lodges with hot tubs. Whether you’re observing nature from your private jacuzzi hot tub or exploring the coastal paths on dog-friendly walks, you’ll be certain to catch a glimpse of the incredible wildlife all around.
Seabirds, Buzzards, and Red Kites
Circling the skies around our adult-only cottages and along the coastline, you’ll find an abundance of seabirds, as well as birds of prey, including buzzards and red kites. It is truly a birdwatcher’s paradise. During the summer months, find seabirds soaring the skies around the bay, from puffins, razorbills and guillemots. The best bird-watching spots include the coastal paths and the cliff tops at Mwnt Beach, making them must-visit locations on your walking holiday in Wales.
Buzzards and Red Kites are often seen swooping through the skies near the cottages and overhead while wandering through the picturesque countryside.
Bottlenose Dolphins
Dolphins can be spotted all year round if you’re lucky enough, but the summer months are known to be the best time to see them leaping in the bay. Just a short distance from our pet-friendly holiday cottages, you’ll find beautiful seaside towns and some of the best beaches in West Wales, including New Quay, a known hot spot for dolphin spotting. Take a boat trip through the blue waters to see these beautiful creatures up close in their natural habitat.
Atlantic Grey Seals
Despite Cardigan Bay being home to more than 5000 Grey Seals, they can be hard to spot, spending the majority of their time out at sea. However, Atlantic Grey Seals can sometimes be found tucked away in hidden coves and secluded caves around Mwnt and Cwmtydu. These wonderful creatures are often easier to spot during the Autumn months as they reside along the shore to care for their newborn pups.
It’s important to observe Grey Seals from a distance to avoid distress, particularly during pupping season.
Bugs, Butterflies and Wildflowers
We are lucky enough to be surrounded by rolling hills and untouched Welsh countryside – home to thousands of different species and small creatures to spot as you amble through the lanes or enjoy your morning coffee in the sunken garden. In the hedgerows, summer meadows, and flowering gardens, you’ll spot gorgeous, vibrant butterflies as well as honey bees and bumblebees keeping the wildflowers blooming. Sit back in your private jacuzzi hot tub on a Summer’s afternoon as you watch the spectacular wildlife all around you.
