New Quay is renowned for dolphin spotting, with several local companies offering wildlife boat trips. During your excursion, you will have the chance to see dolphins, porpoises, and plenty of seabirds! As dolphins usually hunt for food in the mornings, we recommend booking an early trip for the best chance to spot them.

Walk the Coastal Path

Whether you’re after a challenging hike or a leisurely stroll, the Coastal Path has options for every type of walker – but all routes offer spectacular views of our sweeping coastline and idyllic countryside.

For those looking to enjoy the scenery at a slower pace, choose a short, circular walk. For a more strenuous route, a clifftop hike may be your best option.

Many walking routes start in Llangrannog, just a short distance from our dog-friendly cottages in Cardigan Bay. One of our personal favourites is the 3-mile Llangrannog to Ynys Lochtyn circular route, which starts from the Llangrannog beach car park. You will wind through peaceful inland paths to reach the clifftop, where you will enjoy panoramic views of the Ynys Lochtyn peninsula before heading back to the car park.

Heritage Sites and Gardens

West Wales has a rich history, and there are plenty of sites to visit to learn more about our heritage and culture.

We would highly recommend a trip to Cardigan Castle; there’s plenty to see and do, from exploring the grounds and relaxing in the gardens that look over the River Teifi to Escape Rooms and artistic performances.

After you visit the Castle, continue your afternoon in Cardigan Town, where you will find a wonderful selection of independent and boutique stores selling locally-made gifts, trinkets and Welsh produce.

Bottlenose Dolphins

Cardigan Bay is a great place to spot dolphins all year round, but they’re most active around the bay in the summer months. During this time, the longer, lighter days, warmer temperatures and calmer waters attract large pods to visit the bay. 

Seabirds and Birds of Prey

Near the cottages, buzzards and red kites are often seen circling overhead. They can be spotted year-round, but winter is a particularly great time to catch a glimpse as they actively search for food. Along the coastline you’ll often see an array of seabirds – perfect for bird watching. Look out for puffins, guillemots, razorbills and more along the coastal path or from the beautiful sandy beaches. 

Atlantic Grey Seals 

Cardigan Bay is home to over 5000 Grey Seals, who often come ashore during pupping and breeding season. Females reside along the shore and can sometimes be seen tucked away in secluded coves and caves around Mwnt Cwymtydu. These spectacular creatures must only be observed from a distance to avoid distress.

Cardigan County Show – 1st August

Attend the annual agricultural show to see major livestock classes, including cattle, sheep, pigs and horses, as well as vintage machinery, live music and so much more to see and enjoy. 

Cardigan River and Food Festival – 15th August 

With hundreds of food and drinks stalls, this is a great way to sample a selection of delicious local produce from independent Welsh producers. Aberaeron Carnival – 31st August 

This prestigious carnival takes place on the bank holiday weekend in the picturesque coastal town of Aberaeron. The carnival features a procession with floats, community activities, and lots of music. Each year has specific theme colours; this year’s are yellow and green.

Aberaeron Beer and Cider Festival – 8th August 

Held annually at Aberaeron Yacht Club, this day-long event welcomes you to sample a variety of Welsh beverages, tasty food, and dance the night away to classics played by DJs. You’ll find a great selection of real ales, ciders and perries to try as you enjoy the live music and exciting atmosphere. 

New Quay Music Festival – 31st – 2nd August

The Best Walks Around Cardigan Bay (Perfect to Bring Your Four-Legged Friend in Tow)

Cwmtudu to New Quay 

Just a 10 minute drive away from our coastal cottages, you can enjoy a walk along the coastal trail from Cwmtudu to New Quay (4 miles or 8 miles circular). This breathtaking route is known for being the most scenic section of the coastal path in Ceredigion. Starting fairly steep, the route soon levels out as you take in the mesmerising views and clear path ahead. During the summer months, this is a wonderful route for dolphin spotting around the bay, and in the Autumn, you might be lucky enough to spot young seal pups.  

St Dogmaels to Poppit Sands 

Starting from the major local attraction, St Dogmaels Abbey (just a 30 minute drive from our luxury cottages), this 2 mile route is a popular spot for walkers, stretching along the coastal path and following the estuary to the beach at Poppit Sands. The walk is known to include some moderate inclines and breathtaking views of the bay. Be aware of partial restrictions for dogs on Poppit Sands beach from May to September. 

Aeron Valley to Llanerchaeron

Approximately a 40-minute drive from Dolgoy, this walk starts near the picturesque town of Aberaeron. This is a flat and easy 2.5 mile route passing along the harbour and picking up the trail along the River Aeron. Enjoy the charming rural landscape passing through peaceful woodland before ending up at the National Trust property, Llanerchaeron.
