Seek Peace and Tranquillity at a Coastal Retreat

We live in a fast-paced world with long days at work, buzzing phones, hours spent commuting in trains and cars. A moment of solitude can often only be found by escaping the day-to-day and booking a quiet, adults-only weekend away in the UK. Dolgoy Cottages is the perfect retreat.

Our cosy, coastal cottages in Wales are nestled in the serene countryside with lush green grass, rolling hills and beautiful birdsong. Meanwhile, just a short distance away the golden sands, hidden coves and blue waters of our spectacular coastline await.

Embrace mindfulness at the beach

Being near the sea can do wonders for your well-being, with so many elements inspiring the senses. Feel the soft sand rippling through your toes, listen to the waves lapping against the rocks, breathe in the fresh, salty air and take in the vastness of the sea.

Cardigan Bay is home to many beautiful beaches where you can find a secluded spot to switch off and practice mindfulness or meditation. Take deep breaths and feel present in the moment. Soak up the calmness of the tranquil surroundings before returning to your cottage and relaxing into the evening. Recline on the luxurious sofas as the wood burner crackles, and retire to the comfort of your king-size bed for a restful night’s sleep in the quiet countryside.

Stargazing at our dark sky cottages

The night sky is the essence of mindfulness and relaxation – especially at Dolgoy Cottages. With minimal light pollution, thousands of stars twinkle against the darkness. It’s not important to know about constellations, simply immerse yourself in the beauty of the night sky.

West Wales has an impressive selection of recognised stargazing locations, including local beaches, Penbryn and Cwmtydu. Pop a blanket and a flask of hot chocolate in the car, and make yourself comfortable. Concentrate on finding patterns and shapes amongst the stars – you will soon forget about the worries and stresses that daily life brings.

Our secluded dark sky cottages are also a great spot for enjoying the stillness of the dark skies. As the night draws in, turn on your private hot tub, pour a glass of bubbly and relax with your special someone.

Go off-grid and find things to do in West Wales

A digital detox can be the perfect remedy for those with busy schedules. There is no better place to go off-grid than our coastal cottages in Wales. Try turning off your phone or tablet – even just for a couple of hours – during your stay at Dolgoy.

Live in the moment and enjoy the wonders of nature; there is so much to enjoy around the countryside and coastline of Cardigan Bay. Amble down the country lanes to see beautiful flowers and an array of bird life. Or, wander the coastal path for the chance to see dolphins, seals and more. The rustling of leaves and the chorus of birdsong fosters relaxation – it’s far from the hustle and bustle of your home town. Capture the moment without your smartphone.

Exploring the wildlife along the Welsh coastline

Dolgoy Cottages is nestled in the idyllic countryside, while just being a short distance away from the best beaches in West Wales. Our unique location means that we are a haven for some of the most spectacular wildlife that can be found in the UK, from playful dolphins to magnificent birds of prey.

Wildlife spotting often feels like a novelty – how often do you see bottlenose dolphins during your commute to the office? But, spending time immersed in nature helps us take a step back from our busy day-to-day lives, helping us to relieve stress and improve our wellbeing. It’s the perfect activity for recovery holidays and for those who simply just wish to relax.

Our luxury adult-only holiday cottages are the perfect base from which to explore, as well as providing a peaceful setting to rest and rejuvenate after a day of exploring. Each cottage has a private hot tub to soak up the tranquil surroundings and our secluded location keeps noise at a minimum.

In this blog, we have put together a short guide on the types of wildlife you can see, and when and where you can expect to spot them during your stay at our dog-friendly, coastal holiday cottages in Wales.

Bottlenose Dolphins

Cardigan Bay is one of the UK’s most renowned spots for seeing bottlenose dolphins in their natural habitat. Often thought of as tropical creatures, there is something quite magical about spotting groups of bottlenose dolphins emerging from the blue waters of Cardigan Bay.

New Quay is the best location to see them, with several companies offering wildlife boat trips. You may also see other sea creatures along the way, as well as panoramic views of the coastline which you won’t want to miss.

You will have the most opportunities to see the dolphins during the Summer months, between June and September.

Atlantic Grey Seals

Can you believe that Atlantic Grey Seals slumber on our shores, too? It can be rare to see Grey seals, as they spend the majority of their time out at sea, but they can be spotted around Cardigan Bay by taking a breezy walk along the coast or during an organised boat trip.

The best places to spot Atlantic Grey Seals are Cwmtydu and Mwnt, snug amongst the hidden coves and secluded caves, basking on the rocks and sandy shores.

They will come ashore during the autumn months, September to October to care for their newborn pups.

Please be mindful not to get too close. Keep a good distance of 50 metres or more – they are also extremely scared of dogs and the last thing we want to do is cause the pups to escape into the waves before they are ready to swim.

Harbour Porpoises

Related closely to dolphins, harbour porpoises are known for being shy and reserved compared to their exuberant cousins – making them slightly harder to spot. They are also the only species of porpoise that reside in UK waters.

You will have a good chance of seeing harbour porpoises during a walk along the Ceredigion Coast Path, particularly the stretch from Llangrannog. Head to the end of the iconic Ynys Lochtyn for the best opportunity to see them.

Harbour porpoises can be seen throughout the year but it is more common to see them in the summer months.

Bird Life

From sea birds to birds of prey, Cardigan Bay and the surrounding areas are a birdwatcher’s paradise.

During the spring and summer months, take a trip out to the Ynys-hir RSPB Reserve by the Dyfi estuary in Ceredigion to see razorbills, guillemots, and even puffins. The cliff tops at Mwnt beach also provide a good lookout to spot these seabirds.

Graceful but cunning Red Kites can often be seen around our cottages, gliding and swooping through the skies. If you fancy a trip further afield, there is a Red Kite feeding centre near Aberystwyth for the chance to see them up close.

Last but not least, and only frequenting the West side of the UK, are the agile Choughs. Known for being impressive flyers, they dart and dive around the coastline. Similar to the seabirds mentioned above, the cliff tops at Mwnt and New Quay offer the best birdwatching spots for Choughs, and they can often be seen all year round.

Coastal Cottages

Our four coastal holiday cottages in Wales truly have the best of both worlds. Nestled in the secluded countryside, while being just a mile away from the coast as the crow flies – you can even see the horizon from our gates.

There is no feeling quite like spending time near the coast. The fresh sea air energises your body and mind, the rolling waves bring a sense of calm, and the golden sand between your toes makes you feel at one with nature.

The peace and tranquillity of our picturesque coastline is the perfect location to reconnect with your favourite people during a luxury adults-only holiday in the UK. Each of our cottages boasts its own private hot tub and a range of contemporary amenities to help you unwind after a day of exploring. We are also dog-friendly, so you can bring your four-legged friend along for the adventure.

Wander the Ceredigion Coastal Path

Coastal walks offer some of the best views in Wales. You can expect to see sandy shores, hidden coves, colourful clifftop flowers, and an abundance of wildlife and local history.

The Ceredigion Coast Path is no different. This 60-mile stretch is just part of the much larger Wales Coast Path but is home to some of the most beautiful scenery and nature found along the route, including grey seals and bottlenose dolphins. It is one of the many reasons people choose to visit this special corner of the world.

We recommend walking the stretch between Llangrannog and New Quay. This segment of the route is said to be the most spectacular part of the Ceredigion Coast Path. Covering around 9 miles of scenic landscape, including the legendary Carreg Bica, Ynys Lochtyn, and panoramic views of Cardigan Bay.

From our cottages, you are only a short distance from the Ceredigion Coastal Path – we’re just a mile away as the crow flies. Amble through the quaint country lanes until you reach one of the many start points. There are also circular walks that include stretches of the coastal path and a chance to see other towns and beaches including, Penbryn, Tresaith, Aberporth, Aberaeron, Mwnt, Cwm Soden and more. Check availability at our dog-friendly accommodation with enclosed gardens by the sea.

Explore our beautiful beaches and hidden coves

Our coastal holiday cottages are located near some of the finest beaches in West Wales, and many are dog-friendly too!

Cardigan Bay is renowned for its long, sandy beaches and clear blue waters. Feel the sand between your toes and take a refreshing dip in the sea. You can also explore the many hidden coves along the Bay for some peace and quiet, or take in the wonders of the local waterfalls.

Our coastline is also the perfect location to simply sit back, relax and watch the world go by. Find a comfortable spot on the beach to read your favourite book or listen to a much-loved podcast – there’s no better place to experience the UK’s summer sunshine.

Many of our beaches also have nearby pubs and restaurants where you can enjoy the beautiful views with a delicious meal or a quiet drink. Here’s a few of our favourite things to do in the local area:

  • Visit Tresaith village – stroll down to the sandy beach with shallow rockpools and an impressive waterfall. The village has a shop, cafe and pub, with the latter having wonderful views of the beach.
  • Discover local history at Cwmtydu – this area has an industrial heritage, and you can visit the old lime kiln that has been restored in recent years. A freshwater stream provides a lovely spot for the dogs to paddle and splash. There are often grey seal pups residing here in Autumn, so be careful if you visit.
  • Spend the day at New Quay – a picturesque town with lots of places to grab a bite to eat. The beach here is dog-friendly and it’s also a great location to begin a boat trip along the coast – read more on this below!

We have listed some of our favourite locations below, or visit our Friends of Dolgoy Cottages page for more inspiration.

Llangrannog

Llangrannog is a sandy, Blue Flag beach that has something for everyone. Find a comfy spot along the golden shores to read a book, or watch the world go by from the local pubs and cafes that offer wonderful views of the beach.

For those who like adventure, it is a popular beach for surfing, and there is also a variety of walks to do nearby with stunning views of the coastline.

This beach is dog-friendly all year round but has restrictions in some areas between 1st May – 30th September.

Penbryn

Penbryn is an award-winning National Trust beach. From the car park at Llanborth Farm, you can meander through a shady, wooded valley, which is filled with beautiful flowers and wildlife. Follow the pathway which leads you straight onto the sandy beach.

There is a cave on the right-hand side of the beach which you can see and explore during low tide – but there is no other way out, so check the tide tables before you begin your adventure. This beach is dog-friendly all year round but has restrictions in some areas between 1st May – 30th September.

Mwnt

Mwnt is a spectacular National Trust beach, and a haven for the local wildlife, including seals and dolphins. It is also a religious site and is home to the Church of the Holy Cross (Eglwys y Grog), which dates as far back as the 14th Century. There is also a small cafe and shop open between February and October. Please note, dogs are not allowed on this beach between May and September.

Poppit Sands

Poppit Sands sits at the mouth of Teifi Estuary and is surrounded by rolling dunes. It’s the perfect location for relaxing on the beach and spotting wildlife. Poppit is also a dark sky discovery site, so well worth a visit for stargazers. Dogs are not allowed on the Western end of the beach between May and September.

After your visit, why not take a little trip to St Dogmeals which has a historic Abbey to explore, as well as pubs and eateries?

Take a look at our Things to Do page for more inspiration!

You may also have the opportunity to see the charismatic Atlantic Grey Seals, the sometimes shy Habour Poporposes, and plenty of magnificent sea birds such as Razorbills and Guillemots.

There is a selection of reputable businesses in Cardigan Bay offering a range of boat trips. Take a look at A Bay to Remember in Cardigan and New Quay Boat Trips. Make sure you book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Our secluded countryside location is a prime spot for admiring the starry skies. There is no better time to enjoy this activity than in the Winter months when evenings are darker and longer.

Wander the coastal path and explore the quaint market towns

The unique location of our luxury cottages in West Wales has something for every type of couple. Whether you love to explore, relax or wine and dine.

We are just a stone’s throw away from a popular stretch of the Ceredigion Coast Path. Cwmtydu to Llangrannog has some of the most beautiful views and scenery that can be appreciated even in Winter. Wrap up warm and walk hand in hand along the cliff-top path.

There are many local towns to visit with an array of cafes, eateries, pubs and independent retailers – New Quay, Aberaeron and Cardigan are well worth a visit.
